Building a PC for VR: HTC Vive in the Philippines!

Virtual Reality is here in the Philippines! This is really exciting for new generation gaming PC builders but it require some serious PC hardware setup to run this headset.

For most PC gamers and VR enthusiast, this guide is meant to help and prepare you building a PC for VR or upgrading your current PC setup to VR-gaming standards.

Components Outline

Atman Binstock, Chief Architect at Oculus explains that : “a traditional 1080p game at 60Hz requires 124 million shaded pixels per second. In contrast, the Rift runs at 2160×1200 at 90Hz split over dual displays, consuming 233 million pixels per second. At the default eye-target scale, the Rift’s rendering requirements go much higher: around 400 million shaded pixels per second. This means that by raw rendering costs alone, a VR game will require approximately 3x the GPU power of 1080p rendering.”

That’s why I’ve listed each major component’s function that is critical to acquire a premium VR experience.

CPU

The recommended CPU from Oculus and HTC Vive is i5-4590, the slowest processor recommended so far by their developers. If you’re gaming on a flat screen monitor, i5-4590 would be fine but if you’re into VR gaming, the newer i5-6500 / 6600  will do great.

RAM

4GB+ RAM is the recommended memory of HTC and 8GB for Oculus. But for most games 8GB is the sweet spot. If you’re a content creator or video editor and planning to have VR PC, it might be wise to upgrade to 16GB. Otherwise, 8GB will do just fine(acutally it’s a lot). Today’s price of RAM is pretty cheap and actually easy to install just remember that you may need DDR4 RAM and let’s forget about the DDR3 in VR.

GPU

The graphics processing unit is vital component for your vr gaming setup as it’s require to maintain more than  or equal to 90 FPS (frame per seconds).

HTC Vive and Oculus Rift’s developers recommended NVIDIA GTX 970 or AMD R9 390 (or 290) as the minimum starting point to get the full vr experience but obviously the price is much higher compare to the recently released AMD RX 480 and NVIDIA GTX 1060 which performs better and lower price than 970 and 390. This will give yourself additional headroom for aiming 90 fps in more demanding games.

Storage

There’s a lot of debate whether what to choose HDD or SSD. To give you a summary, HDD will give you a lot of space with a cheaper cost. While SSD yielded faster read/write speed performance that definitely speed up your computing experience which is costly compare to HDD. It may not be necessary for budget builders but a solid state drive will help you improve your vr gaming setup.

Motherboard

Obviously, this is your mothership of your PC. Well not exactly a mothership and not directly affecting your VR experience, but your motherboard will hold everything and provide you the basic foundation for the connection of your hardware that is not only compatible to your processor but also having a decent quality.

Make sure that the motherboard should have three USB 3.0 ports and at least one USB 2.0 port available for the headset and tracking cameras.

PSU

Basically, most of the time PC builders tend to forget this small box and rely only that comes with their case. Seriously? We don’t know the quality and the specs of that PSU that comes free inside the case. Since we don’t want to ruin everything, let’s have a decent PSU that are from reputable manufacturers.

Kindly, make sure that your PSU should provides PCI 6-8pin connectors to supply your GPU and atleast 600-750w with 80plus certification. If you’re planning to have 2 or multi- gpu installed, you must have atleast 1000+w PSU.
